Salvia Divinorum, commonly referred to as Salvia, is a plant commonly ingested for its varying psychoactive effects. The leaf of the herb can be smoked, chewed, or taken as an alcoholic extract. Salvia is not federally regulated in the United States although a few states have passed laws against its use. The effects of Salvia can range from slight euphoria to detailed and intense altered states. The most common method of ingestion in the United States is to smoke Salvia. While the milder effects can be had with little education on the subject, to experience the full blown possibilities the user must smoke Salvia in a very particular manner. Often users will report a disappointment with the mild effects of smoking Salvia improperly. Here are well know steps for smoking Salvia if the user is attempting to achieve the advanced altered states.
1. Environment – The setting is very important while smoking Salvia. A quiet, dark room is needed to realize the full effects. Because smoking Salvia can produce vivid hallucinations it is advisable to have someone with you to “babysit.” Knowing that sound and light will lessen the effects can be of great help if the user is having an unpleasant experience.
2. Smoking Device and Flame Source – A water pipe, often referred to as a bong, is the best device for smoking Salvia. It is also important to have a flame with a high heat to ignite the Salvia leaves. Torch lighters or small propane torches are recommended although a regular lighter can be used.
3. Technique and Inhalations – The flame of the lighter must be held on the leaves for the duration of the inhalation. Even if the leaves are hot enough to have created an ember, the flame should still remain on the Salvia. While smoking Salvia the user should take deep and lengthy inhalations. Some users advise continually filling and smoking Salvia from the water pipe until the desired effects are met. This method usually involves refilling the water pipe with fresh leaves while the user is still holding the last inhalation.
4. Body Position and Duration – By following these instructions the user should only need one to four deep inhalations to achieve the intense effects of smoking Salvia. Once the user begins to feel the effects they should lay down or position themselves in a comfortable chair. As stated earlier this should happen in a prepared space that is dark and quiet. To feel the full effects of smoking Salvia the user should try to avoid moving. Users report that the intense effects are only felt for three to five minutes with residual effects lasting for another ten or so minutes.
